Website performance is part of the experience, not a technical detail that can be postponed until the design is finished. A fast, stable page helps people understand the offer without unnecessary friction.
Visitors feel performance before they analyse it. They notice when the main content takes too long to appear, when a button moves as an image loads or when scrolling becomes unresponsive. Those moments affect confidence in the business behind the page.
Performance shapes the first impression
The opening seconds set the tone for everything that follows. If the first screen appears promptly and remains steady, the website feels considered. If it arrives in fragments, visitors have to wait before they can even decide whether the content is relevant.
This matters most on mobile devices and less reliable connections. A design should not depend on ideal hardware or perfect network conditions to communicate its central message.
Start with the heaviest assets
Large images and video often create the biggest performance cost. They should be exported at appropriate dimensions, delivered in efficient formats and loaded according to where they appear on the page. A small card does not need the same file as a full-screen hero.

Stable layouts come from clear dimensions, predictable component states and careful font loading. These decisions should be part of the component system rather than patched onto individual pages later.
Use less code where less code will do
Every animation library, analytics script and interactive widget adds work for the browser. Some are valuable, but each one should earn its place. A simple interaction built with the platform can be more reliable than a large dependency added for one effect.
The same principle applies to motion. Animate the properties that browsers handle efficiently, keep sequences focused and provide a reduced-motion experience. Performance and accessibility often improve together when the interface is more deliberate.
A practical performance checklist
- Prioritise the content and image visible in the first screen.
- Serve responsive images instead of one oversized source everywhere.
- Reserve space for media, forms and content that arrives later.
- Remove scripts and components that do not support a real user need.
- Test on mobile screens and ordinary connections, not only a fast desktop.
- Recheck performance when content, tracking or third-party tools change.
